Anxiety Q&A

What is anxiety?

Anxiety is an emotion. It’s when you feel tense, worried, or excited. Anxiety may also cause physical symptoms like sweating or shaking.

Your feelings of anxiety are normal and how your body copes with stress. It’s even beneficial, boosting energy and concentration. Anxiety is temporary, and your feelings of worry resolve once the stress is gone.

When is anxiety a problem?

Anxiety is troublesome when it persists and gets worse, making it hard for you to function normally. Ongoing and overwhelming anxiety are signs of an anxiety disorder.

Anxiety disorders are a group of mental health conditions characterized by persistent worry or fear without a significant cause. Examples of anxiety disorders include:

Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD)

If you excessively worry about work, health, or the safety of loved ones, then you may have GAD.

Panic disorder

Panic disorder causes sudden, intense, and paralyzing feelings of fear even when you’re safe, or possibly lead to a panic attack. During a panic attack, you feel out of control, struggle to catch your breath, or experience an impending sense of doom.

Phobias

Phobias are an exaggerated fear of things or situations, like fear of spiders or flying.
